Product Description
Nutritionist and yoga practitioner Deanna Minich’s Chakra Foods provides information on how to heal emotional and physical woes through making the right food choices. The material for this book developed out of the author’s highly successful “Nutrition for the Soul” classes, workshops, and private counseling sessions. Not a diet book, it looks at both the nutritional and spiritual aspects of the foods we eat and how they can heal us. For example, someone feeling stuck in their lives could turn to chapter 5 and find a list of orange foods — apricots, carrots, salmon, pumpkin, oranges — to help their sacral chakra. For each chakra, specific affirmations and other practices are also offered, as are meal plans and recipes. Helpful lists, charts, and diagrams help readers easily pinpoint and diagnose themselves and the various prescriptive options are all very clearly explained. With lots of useful sidebars, this book really is a treasure trove of energy me… More >>

I think this book is a great read on the chakras, even if you aren’t interested in changing your diet. It has one of the best ‘chakra quizzes’ I have seen, for identifying potential chakra blocks and imbalances, and the explanations and examples of people with various chakra issues are very good.
I work with the chakras myself, and have for almost 20 years, and honestly I was at first a bit skeptical of approaching diet through the chakras, it was definitely a new idea for me. But the author doesn’t only approach re-balancing from the perspective of food, she covers others life areas as well. And her insights on our relationship with food, both emotionally and psychologically, are excellent, and made me look at some of my lingering ‘cravings’ in a new light. By the end, I was sold. And I have incorporated suggestions for diet changes into my life and found them very beneficial.

In “Chakra Foods for Optimum Health,” Deanna M. Minich, Ph.D., C.N. presents to the reader the correlation between the different chakras and different foods and draws out plans to help us achieve a balance. “After all, chakras are energy centers in the entire being, and food provides energy to feed these aspects of ourselves. Chakra Foods gently walks you through the journey of your energetic landscape and gives you creative tools and insight as to how foods and ways you eat can heal, brighten, balance, and strengthen parts of you that need not only physical, but spiritual nourishment.” (p. xii)
The book begins with a chakra assessment in order to help you determine which of your seven chakras needs the most attention: the root chakra, the sacral chakra, the solar plexus chakra, the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the third eye chakra, or the crown chakra. For each statement listed you rate how much it applies to you. The area that has the most points is the area in which you should begin your focus. What follows are individual chapters addressing each of the chakras and the foods to eat to help balance them.
For instance, one of the areas of mine that needed more balance was the Solar Plexus Chakra. Apparently this is a common one to have issues with, at least in the Western world. Some of Minich’s advice for correcting this imbalance includes knowing when you are hungry and being aware of food energy. Then she presents different food charts listing foods that sustain, balance, and nourish this chakra.
It is obvious that a lot of time and work went into the making of this book. Every concept is thoroughly explained and there are multitudes of charts for easy reference and to further drive home the points being made. There is even a recipe section at the end of the book which I found to be helpful as some of the foods I had never even heard of before, let alone knew how to use. “Chakra Foods for Optimum Health” is a very interesting book exploring the chakra/food relationship and I believe that the advice given would be useful to anyone interested in achieving a better life balance.

I appreciated this book’s different perspective on food. It is about how food provides so much more than physical sustenance – like emotional and spiritual well being. Also, I like the interactive format of the book and the recipes are delicious! Thank you.
