Medical folks are trained to watch for anaphylaxis regardless of the source. Everyone has a unique immune system (like a fingerprint), each with its own weaknesses. Some kids have life-threatening allergies to bees or peanuts. It would be interesting to know the exact antigenic trigger of anaphylaxis in these kids, but I don’t think identification would change human behavior. Anti-vaccine extremists might suggest we eliminate bees and peanuts from the planet.

Kids typically get Hep B from an infected mother (vertical transmission). This occurs in utero or during birth. Widespread screening of pregnant moms and early vaccination of babies has reduced the incidence of perinatal Hep B dramatically. Other less-common causes in kids: blood transfusions, sharing injection needles (drug abusers), or sexual transmission.

This 5th edition is very in depth for medically qualified people active in occupational and therefore also in environmental health. All aspects, medical, social, even political, are fully discussed. Appropriately this sentence is stressed : Screening and monitoring, in and of themselves, prevent nothing; only the appropriate intervention, in response to results of these tests can prevent.

However, nowhere is it precisely stated which results should have an intervention as a result.

I bought this book because my “Industrial Chemical Exposure. Guidelines for Biological Monitoring” by Robert R. Lauwerys and Perrine Hoet. 2nd ed. Lewis, Boca Raton, 1993, looked a bit outdated. I must confess, in my new acquisition I miss pages 290-305 of the old one (16 pages of tables, titled “Biological Monitoring of Chemical Agents”, with a column each for 1.Chemical agent 2.Parameter, 3.Biological material, 4. Reference value, 5.Tentative maximal permissible value, 6. Remarks.)

For that kind of data the new text refers to the websites of the CDC, ATSDR, etc. There, it is not that simple to find intervention limits for the hundreds of chemical nuisances.

As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I found this book to be an essential part of my learning experience. It is important that everyone involved in the mental health system understand the history of this system - - where we were and how we got to here.

This book covers issues such as the nature of mental health and mental illness, the flow of patients into treatment, the development of mental health policy in the United States, HMO's, the Community Mental Health Act, and how policies impact those really in need of care.

I highly recommend this book for all students and professionals who seek to understand the system of mental health in our country. It is written in an interesting way and is a wealth of information. Rating: 5 / 5
