I’m writing a big report to one of the schools I want to go to to try and get some sort of pro-pet policy in place in their residence housing. Under their policies, it says pets aren’t allowed due to health and safety concerns (specifically because in residential housing you’re living in close quarters). What are some arguments for and against this you can think of?

health: lots and lots of people are allergic to pets! many are allergic to dogs & cats, but i know someone who’s allergic to guinea pigs!
safety: any pet can be a safety concern. a dog that “turns on” someone and “attacks”, a cat who scratches or bites, etc.
for: animals can be a great stress relief. especially because college is so hectic, animals can be great therapy.

Well, a lot of people/teens/college students tend to be busy or think of animals as just toys, and will neglect them. So, the dirty cages can cause a health concern as the smell can trigger asthma. Things like hamster shavings can also trigger asthma. Not to mention some people have extreme allergies and can’t be close to animals. (Although a pet-specific dorm would take care of that.)
Also, if the animals are not kept vaccinated, healthy, and clean, it can also spread diseases and such. Especially with unclean college students who would have the great idea to touch animal poop from a sick animal, then go eat supper.
Pets are really banned from places like dorms because a lot of people are irresponsible and stupid. Period.
For, they are great at relieving stress and are proven to lower blood pressure. They are awesome companions for students far away from home, and lots can be caged, which schools really like.
