Q & A

I would like to have my dog health tested and certified in Central NJ. My vet and another that I called in my area do not do this… maybe I’m asking them for the wrong test? Does anyone know of any Vets in central NJ that perform health checks for genetic defects? Any tips on what I should be asking them for specifically? This is for a Toy Poodle (her parents were miniatures, but she only stands at 9 1/2″. I can’t show her because when she was docked as a puppy her tail got infected and had to be amputated.
Also, I would like to learn about showing my male but I am not sure as to where to start? Any suggestions?

Check the yellow pages in your area for both of your questions. Hope my answer was helpful?

Get in touch with a breed club near you and speak to someone knowledgable in the breed. Also check out the appropriate Kennel Club website (?American) for breed information, breed standards and Breed Club Secretaries. If all this information is required for possible future breeding it has to be said there are thousands and thousands of unwanted pooches out there and is it necessary to increase the population of possibly unwanted dogs and certainly not if they should carry any defect. Although it is very commendable to have health tests done bedfore breeding for the future of any breed.
These are some of the problems that have been listed for Toy Poodles in US
**Achondroplasia; allergies; atopy; basal cell tumour; behavioural abnormalities; cataract; cerebrospinal dymelination; deafness; dermatitis atopic; distichiasis; ectodermal defects; ectopic ureters; entropion; epilepsy; epiphora; epiphyseal dysplasia; Factor VIII deficiency or Haemophilia A; Factor XII deficiency; glaucoma; globoid cell leukodystrophy; granulomatous sebaceous adenitis; hemeralopia; haemolytic anemia; haemphilia A; hepatic porto systemic shunt or arterio venous fistula; hyperadrenocorticism or Cushings disease; hyposomatotropism; hypothyroidism; intervertebral disc disease; iris atrophy; lacrimal duct atresia; lysomal storage disease; microphthalmia; osteochondritis dissecans; osteochondrosis; osteogenesis imperfecta; otitis externa; pannus; patella luxation; patent ductus arteriosis; progressive retinal atrophy; retinal detachment; sebaceous gland tumour; squamous cell carcinoma; ventricular septal defect; Von Willebrand’s disease
To show in US at recognised AKC/FCI events your dog would have to be on their registers as a pedigree breed.

Most dog shows have health clinics and you don’t have to be showing the dog to go to the health clinic. I had my dog eyes CERF and heart checked at the last dog show in Ft. Worth, TX. For hips and elbows you will need to see a vet, I’m sure your vets would do the OFA on them. If there are other tests for your breed, your vet should be able to guide you to the right place for those tests. Show clinic’s are relatively cheap as they are able to do so many at one time and everyone saves a little money.

Find some good toy poodle breeders in your area and ask them for referrals. They will know the good and bad things about every vet in the general area. They can also help you with showing questions.

Aslo, if you are in NJ, you are no more than an hour or two from UPENN–one of the best veterinary schools in the USA. You could always try to get an appointment with them.

Poodle Club of America has many local chapters. Join the one nearest you and meet some of the folks showing poodles in your area.

They will be able to recommend Vets in your area who they already use and who are familiar with the necessary health tests. They will also be able to evaluate your male and help you with showing him.

You are in luck. The Wachtung Mountain Poodle Club in NJ is holding a health clinic min-August. Some of the testing is by pre-entry. It’s held at Top Dog in Flanders, NJ. This health clinic is also open to all other breeds and mixbreeds.

Visit the Match Show Bulletin website at download their events for June 2009 and scroll down. You’ll find a page with Health Clinics, all the information, the price, what tests are being done and by what veterinarians, who to contact and reserve a spot is all there.

I’ve done this clinic, with my mixbreed and my dachshund. We usually do the eye clinic.

edit: If your interested in showing your dog, there are lots of dog shows in NJ. So visit the AKC website or the websites for MB-F (infodog) or
Rau Dog shows. They will all have upcoming schedules. Pick a local show, download an AKC entry form, fill it out and mail it in before the trial closing date. Just make sure you enter the right class. If you need help, call any of the above and they’ll help you with the form.
