This book was a complete waste of time and money. Very disappointing.

I agree with Ed’s review and immediately came to the assumption that “Dr.” Batman is a psuedo-doctor “type” of wholistic “medicine.” There is no way that a true medical doctor could have written this book.

As a top level endurance athlete, I agree with the importance of water’s role in the human body. I was disappointed that Dr. Quackman doesnt support any of his theories with actual medical case studies or evidence. Furthermore, many of his theories are too far-fetched (and even in contradiction) to even be possible. Within the first 25 pages, I dreaded finishing this book and found fault with the majority of his conclusions/claims. ie pg 42- how can a vomiting mother-to-be’s body be a natural way of adjusting body hydration? ever vomit or have diarhea before a 120 mile bicycle race? i have. vomiting leads to severe dehydration and depletion of electrolytes (salts). A typical example an incorrect statement and conclusion. The book is filled with non-sense.

I purchased the book as a result of a recommendation and these reviews. I hope EVERYONE READS THIS REVIEW and doesnt buy this book. Save your money/time and SELECT ANOTHER BOOK. I generally like everything I read. This is the ONLY time Ive felt a book should be AVOIDED. I feel the lack of medical foundation of his recommendations can cause SERIOUS MEDICAL HARM. Before trying anything he advocates, one should SEE A TRUE MEDICAL DOCTOR.

Readers will find better hydration advice in a typical Running or Cycling book.

Firstly, I do agree that most people do not get sufficient water during the day. Drinking more water, and being hydrated, is a good thing and does help with a number of issues. However, this doctor is saying that water can cure you of a number of diseases that it just won’t.

The tone of the book begins as very defensive, with a rebuttle to an article another doctor wrote about this water cure idea. It goes on for quite a long time, and the defensive posture is echoed throughout the book. I admit, the author has a lot to be defensive about, as, in my opinion, this book is full of junk science and dubious references. A classic case of garbage in garbage out.

Drink your 64oz of water a day and feel better. There, I just saved you the cost of the book, the waste of time reading it and picking through the dross to find the tiny little well-known nugget of gold at the center.

If you are really concerned about your body and making it as healthy as you can, I personally recommend YOU, THE OWNER’S MANUAL by Roizen and OZ as a far better resource. Not to mention a considerably better read.

The author is ‘right on’ in emphasizing the importance of water in our life. I agree with the ‘conclusion’ of his arguments, particularly the importance of ‘prevention’ as compared to the ‘cure’. I agree also with his views on the importance of salt and minerals in our diet. In fact, his summary at the end of the book is good. So why do I have a problem with the book? Virtually all of his ‘theories’ presented, essentially as a ‘cure’, or at least a help in the prevention of a disease, are unsubstantiated, exaggerated, and largely unbelievable. He would have us believe that hydration of the body will prevent or inhibit virtually all diseases afflicting mankind. There is almost no mention of support for his hypotheses by reputable people in the medical professions; no peer reviews. Peer reviews are the essential part of understanding and revising medical practice ( or any scientific theory for that matter.) We are to believe there exists some sort of alliance of doctors and the drug industry to prevent the public from learning that if we are ‘hydrated’ most of the drugs on the market today would be unnecessary ( unacceptable to those industries that thrive on the fat profits).

Perhaps I’m over stating my problem with the book, but I believe the way it is presented is much too self serving and runs the risk of being counter productive; a very harmful result for such an important subject.

  5. Benjamin Robert Johnson Says:

Water is one of the essential ingredients to maintain a healthy and functioning system. I agree with the author on how important water is in our daily lives. However, many of us do not drink the required and healthy amount of water needed every day. Most or some of us drink below the necessary requirement for water. I do hope that we become more aware of the health benefits of water more than other drinks and foods. Water is as much or is more important than eating fruits and veggies.

This book was recommended to me by a friend who claimed it changed his life. It was a good reminder although I found some of the theories to be a bit exaggerated.
